Solazyme to Help Strategize with Congressman Pete Stark and Obama Administration on National and Bay Area Job Creation
CEO Jonathan Wolfson to Participate in US Department of Commerce International Trade Administration (ITA) and Economic Development Administration (EDA) Forum "Manufacturing, Exports and Job Creation in the New Economy"
| WHAT: | Solazyme Inc., a renewable oil production company and leader in algal biotechnology, will be joining Congressman Pete Stark; Ro Khanna the ITA’s deputy secretary for domestic operations; Brian McGowan, the EDA’s deputy assistant secretary; local labor leaders; public officials; and other top Silicon Valley executives to brainstorm strategies for creating well-paying jobs and promoting exports in the region. The group will explore how Silicon Valley’s innovation – particularly in the manufacturing sector as new technologies move to commercialization – can aid this process. Solazyme is a leader in renewable oils and advanced biofuels production and was recently named the number one biofuels company in the world by Biofuels Digest. Solazyme is also one of a handful of advanced biofuel producers who received a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to open an integrated biorefinery demonstration plant. With this plant, which is already operating in Pennsylvania while undergoing expansion, and additional near-term commercialization plans, Solazyme is uniquely positioned to create jobs in multiple states and is well-equipped to talk about the infrastructure for the manufacturing and biotechnology sectors. |
| WHO: | Solazyme’s CEO and co-founder Jonathan Wolfson will be available for interviews before and after the panel to discuss how his industry and his company are helping create jobs in the Bay Area and in other states. |
| WHEN/WHERE: | Friday, April 9, 2010 |
| WHY: | The global recession has hit the Bay Area hard, with the unemployment rate fluctuating between 9 and 13 percent over the last year. However, California has always acted as one of the Nation’s manufacturing centers, and the Bay Area has a long history as a hotbed for innovation and entrepreneurship. This forum will connect local leaders with key executives in the Obama Administration to discuss the strategies that will once again create well-paying jobs and lead to the development, commercialization and deployment of new technologies and products that will spur economic growth. |
